She won a 14 inch COLOUR TV haha which we had trouble carrying back home. Will have struggled even more if not for Alex's help!!!! />One Asia Forum is a platform for young people to sit and discuss the roles of social media in development. The aim is to inspire a generation of youth with strong understanding of the internet to contribute their social media exposure for positive development and a better future for the region.

It is also a forum for discussion on how social media can bring young people from across Asia to collaborate on new social and economics projects. It provides the opportunity for them to share their thoughts and projects with their peers from other Asian countries. At the end of the day, it is our hope that this One Asia Forum will spawn new initiatives that will take Asia to a greater height – if not now, in the near future!

The theme of One Asia Forum is "Youth and Social Media: Online Collaborations and the Future of Asia". One Asia Forum is comprised of lectures, discussions and "Youth Speak! workshops". It is a participant-centered programme and all participants are expected to take active roles during the Forum.

It was a fun and fulfilling trip for me! (Unfortunately, due to my innate lack of direction sense, maybe I arrived a tad later than 6pm.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BUIlrixxb6E/SzN-ZmoiFxI/AAAAAAAAAKc/1hCS0t6rgYE/s320/Benny_0092.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418813754989221650" />

By then, everyone had already begun eating their dinner: Nasi Lemak/ chicken rice. Honestly, we were quite amazed by Zhiwang’s voracious appetite. (We think he can finish up till 3 packets of chicken rice in 1 go.) His stomach must be really big. But I guess that’s forgivable, since the real work begins after dinner!

The people present were: Zhiwang, Zhiwang’s friend, Wani, Alex, Daniel, Sandy, Yufei. After dinner, Wani taught us some basic balloon sculpturing skills like how to make a balloon dog, sword and flower. It was really scary twisting the balloon at first for first-timers like me – so scared that it’ll burst!!!! But luckily it didn’t. Alex was worse; he kept giving out small high-pitched screams every time he twists the balloon, and these random screams carried on for many minutes later until he was sure that the balloon meant no harm to him -_-

So we managed to complete our first balloon sculpture which was a DOG! I guess it wasn’t too bad for first-timers, even though my dog’s nose was too long and Alex’s dog looked more like a giraffe. Nevertheless, we got better and better at this balloon sculpturing thing and moved on to make swords and flowers. Some of the neighbourhood kids even joined us in making balloon sculptures!:D
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BUIlrixxb6E/SzN-su6tKTI/AAAAAAAAAKs/h8KcZP4L4PM/s320/Benny_0015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418814083630442802" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BUIlrixxb6E/SzN-ZyNU72I/AAAAAAAAAKk/JWm8s0NxAxc/s320/IMG_5282.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418813758096338786" />

As more and more people started flowing in, we distributed the balloon swords, flowers, and dogs amongst the children. They were hugely popular among the kids! Nothing beats seeing a smile creep up on a 5 year old’s face when you hand him a balloon sword you made yourself. Aww, so cute. *melts*

The balloon sculpturing event lasted up till 730pm. By then, the game that they were playing (guess-the-xmas-song) was nearing to the end and the first round of lucky draw was about to begin. The adults were more concerned than the kids though, the kids were quite nonchalant about the lucky draw and we had quite a hard time trying to help them settle down.

The next highlight of the evening was snake- charming cum magic performance. Both adults and children were very excited to see and touch real pythons and cobras! As the snake charmer blew through his instrument, the snake came out of the basket. Many ‘ooohhs’ and ‘aaahhhs’ were heard from the crowd as everyone was in awe. Cameras were instantly whipped out to capture the moments. The snake charmer invited many residents, including children to interact with the snakes by touching and letting the snakes hang around their neck. So brave of them! Overall, the show was really entertaining and won the applause of many.

Carolling sessions were interspersed in the event and the YEC as well as members from the RC were invited to lead the crowd in singing X’mas songs such as ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘We wish you a merry X’mas’ and ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’. It was really heartwarming when the crowd joined in the singing, and moved along with the music (: Music is a universal language, and no doubt everyone felt closer and more bonded afterwards.

(Pssst, it was my first time singing into a mike too!)

The X’mas party culminated in the final lucky draw where the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, which were all bicycles were drawn. Winners were overjoyed as they went up to receive their prizes. Those who didn’t win any prizes in the lucky draw didn’t go home empty handed either, everyone had their goody bags, door gifts, popcorns and ice-cream. Most importantly, friendships and ties were forged and strengthened as we spent Xmas with our loved ones.

Merry X’mas and good tidings to all (:

Yufei,
Asst General Secretary

Walk on Southern Ridges 29 March 2009

Walk on the Southern Ridges 29 March 2009

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318838211964523666" style="DISPLAY: block; This year we collaborated with zone12 to organise the Fantasy Christmas 2008. As the name suggests, there were magic show by a renowned local magician Imran, ballon sculpture performance, kid's dress-up-into-a-fantasy-character costume competition and not forgetting the opening of the pinata (all the candies seems to fall from the sky) which acts as a grand finale to the whole event, elevating the atmosphere and making it a truly magical and Fantasy Christmas for the kids!

Other than the interesting programme lined up for the kids, I feel that the adults, especially members from the zone12, enjoyed the Christmas with YEC's prescence! Thanks to Wani, each of our YEC members get to wear beautifully hand-made fairy wings of various colours which made us all look like little fairies. The backdrop was also done by our YEC. We came early in the afternoon and start making the backdrop. Thanks to Samantha who suggested the idea of using the black garbage bags as the background. We made stars out of golden papers and a "Super snowman" out of styrofoam board.

On the whole, everyone enjoyed the xmas party even though the event over-run a lot. Actually this was the monthly meeting of our Frontier YEC for May. Instead of the boring discussion in the usual conference room, we grouped together in the Botanical Gardens this time to share information collected by each member, plan for the following events, while having fun. Also, during this outing, we conducted a survey of the condition here in details, as this garden would be a site of Education Tour which is a meaningful event we are preparing.
Around 1.30 pm, our bus got to the gate of Children’s Garden. After lunch, we sit in a circle outside the garden and start our meeting. It lasted about 2 hours. Then we went inside and enjoyed the beauty of the scenary. The first sight was the Evolution Garden where we took photos and played games happily. Then we visited the corner green, saw Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage and went by National Orchid Garden, Ginger Garden, Coach Drop-off and Swan Lake. When we got out, we discussed and selected a final path for the Education Tour. Afterward, we got on the bus and went back.
This meeting was indeed happy and efficient. Hope we can have activities like this more often. I had really a good time together with all YEC members. This outing is another unforgettable memory of my days in Frontier YEC. I think our members are great and our YEC is great. Let’s just keep on working together and get ready for the coming events!

Shenkai

Mother's Day Celebration dinner on 10 May 2008

Mother's Day Celebration dinner on 10 May 2008
(Collaboration with various zones rcs)

“有一个名字叫母亲，有一份情叫母爱。”
It’s 10th May, the day before Mother’s Day. We PRC students went to Jurong East to celebrate Mother’s Day.
As long as I arrived there, I saw a line of words read mother is always our idol. My tear was just filled my eyes. I suddenly felt very proud of myself, because I could be here to help and celebrate this special day with more other mothers although I cannot stay with my own mom. After we had our lunch there, we started to pack goody bags for our moms. We are all interested in it and we even enjoyed competing each other that who could pack faster. That’s really much more fun than tiredness.
Some of us are also invited to the dinner in the evening. It’s our first time to attend this kind of big dinner in Singapore. We were very excited about the procedure they served the dishes and the shows during the dinner. The singers sang very well. Particularly, I enjoyed the “dress show” very much. A senator of Singapore also came over to visit our moms as well. He seems to be very kind and I was 惊讶 的to see this big shot in such a short distance.
Over all, it’s a meaningful day for all of us and I want to say mother is always our idol.

Senyuan

Mother's Day Celebration dinner on 10 May 2008

Mother's Day Celebration dinner on 10 May 2008
(Collaboration with various zones rcs)

Since this mother’s day celebration is held by many RCs together, I felt this is one of the biggest activities I joined in Singapore. In the afternoon, we helped people there to make goodies bags, it’s a pleasure working with those people, and we cooperated well. In the evening, we had a good dinner and enjoyed the show. Although I don’t know most of the singers and dancers on the stage, they really performed well. The only thing that made me sad is the speed they offered food, really slow. However, that’s not the point. The point is our wishes to our mothers. Best wishes to our mothers!

WangHao

Teambuilding course at Taman Jurong CC

Teambuilding course at Taman Jurong CC

The Frontier YEC was honoured to attend a team building workshop organised by Taman Jurong YEC on 19th April 2008.
The workshop “Looking In, Focusing Out- The Motivational Profile Approach” was conducted by NACLI. A few of us attended th workshops: Carol, me, Wanling and Bixin.
It helps us to learn about the primary motivations that motivate ourselves and also how others are motivated.

We started the day by first having some physical stretching session in a fun manner.
This was followed by an icebreaker session where we try to learn more about the background of each other.
From there, we found out that some of us are musically inclined; others are camp lovers; others having high level of medical knowledge and many interesting things.
We had various results from the motivational profiling questionnaire and apparently I seem to have results that is not in tandem with the majority (Maybe I have weird way of thinking and have a special way of being motivated =P).

Lunch was next on the schedule.
We had lunch in a buffet style at the hall of Taman Jurong CC.
A game of “ding and dong” that requires a focused brain was the first item after lunch.
It was then followed by “transformer” and “traffic light” where we put our motivational profiling into practice before we call it for a day.
Kuan Siong

Emergency Preparedness Day

Today’s Emergency Preparedness Day is a very interesting and meaningful event. The event began at 10 a.m. and came to the end at 2 p.m. in Jurong Medical Centre. We learnt what to do when a bomb exploded or when the place where we stay was fired through the painting board. We learnt how to prevent mosquitoes’ breeding through a small model and we learnt how to do first aid through life guard’s demonstration. There was also bedroom & bathroom hygiene staircase and easily self health check. A blood donation section was set and Carol, Ben and Wang Hao were very brave to donate their blood. But only Ben reach the doctor’s requirement thus only he could donate. I was afraid of pain so I didn’t participate. Now I’m thinking of trying next time because it is an unique experience in life.
In short, this kind of event can teach people, especially children, some general knowledge of body health, family hygiene and behavior in emergency. It educates people to lead a more comfortable and healthier lifestyle.
By the way, we were not so lucky at the lucky draw as we did not win anything. However, I enjoyed this event very much and I hope every one enjoyed today.

Weiru
20/04/2008

the gathering,
is just so wonderful=)

Today we had our gathering at sakura restaurant, locatedat Jurong West swimming complex.
the food was just,
too delicious!!!

today was the first gathering with the newly joined PRCs members! yay!

the event starts off with having meetings and introduction of the PRCs and after that, we had our buffet! during the eating time, YECs members and the PRCs members actually get to interact with each other and have jokes around the table.

when all of us starting to feel full, Michelle, our assistant social cum development secretary, came out with a ice-breaking game for us. all of us do enjoy that game!

of coz, aftering playing and eating, the session ended with taking loads of pictures!
the pictures posted by sabrina! so do enjoy the photos!

so overall,
hope to have more people to join us and,

MORE EATING SESSIONS!! hahahas..

ivy--

Team building over Sumptuous Buffet LuNcH!

We had our team building cum YEC meeting on 5th Jan 2008 at Sakura at Jurong West Swimming Complex for their International Buffet Lunch. Today is very special as we had the PRCs attached to us to attend our Team Building event. Let’s warmly welcome them. =)
The PRCs attached to us are as follows:
Majie
Huang Xu
Shen Kai
Senyuan
Weiru
Shiyan
Wan Hao

*Applause *

In addition, we had an observer with us today. He’s Jeremy (Jing Kang’s friend).
*Applause* Our YEC is really expanding. YEAH!

Before we had our lunch, we had our monthly YEC meeting. We have discussed about our Chinese New Year Tour, Storytelling Competition (Flagship Event) and Egaming etc.

Without further ado, let’s FEAST !!
It was a Japanese plus International Buffet. They have Sashimi (YUM!), Dim Sum, fried food, grilled fish, chicken etc…. there’s definitely no lag of food.

                                Everyone is enjoying their FOOD!

After we were all fully and well fed, we had a round of introduction. We had better idea about each other’s name, our interests and occupation/ field of study. This introduction is not done without an objective. We played a game whereby we had to write our name and 3 things about ourselves (2 things that is true and 1 is untrue). When Michelle read out all the facts about the person, we had to say which fact is false. During the game, everyone is enthusiastic guessing which fact is false. Everyone had fun guessing which is false and using our own theory to eliminate the facts or using their “feel” to guess which fact does not fit the person. Even though it’s a simple game, but everyone enjoyed the process of it. On top of it, we got to know everyone, even for those members who had been in the committee since last term.

Personally, I feel that I got to know more about the PRCs. Not only about themselves, I also got to know more about their hometown. From the famous attractions, to their culture and food. This further enhances my interest in China, which I was already attracted to China’s magnificent landscapes, mountains and food culture. =) Hopefully, I have chance to visit to these famous and beautiful attractions.

                                                   Our Group Pic

Food is the common link between all.. Finally, all our PRC members got to get together with YEC staff. For most of us, it’s the first time to meet with their buddies, making us quite excited. Still, it’s a pity that several buddies were absent. Before lunch, we had a meeting discussing the working plan for the following half year. As we are newcomers in this team, we didn’t really contribute much to the meeting. Most of the time, we just sit and listen. To tell the truth, we got confused about the procedure of the meeting. Although we didn’t say anything during the meeting, I think the existence of us did count. As we nod or smile during their presentation, they felt the recognition of their proposal from us. Thus, we had an efficient meeting. After that, we ate lunch and chat together. Everyone was so friendly that we soon got familiar with each other. We even played a little game---Each one write 3things about oneself, one of which should be false. And the rest should find out the false one. That game helped us get to know each member better and created a friendly atmosphere within the team. Every of our PRC members valued the chance to work with these local friends. We would like to put every effort to help them and make friends with all of them. We like this team, we enjoy the CC activities.

- Shen Kai

Christmas Cum Countdown Party @ Zone 5

Christmas Cum Countdown Party @ zone 5

Date: 29 Dec. 2007

Time: 7:30 pm.

Venue: Zone 5 RC multi-purpose hall

This was the first event which I took part in with YECs. Our job was to serve the food and my job was to tear the tickets and tell my friends how many sets of food we should provide. Usually we served two or three sets at a time but sometimes we need to serve 8 sets at a time. Haha, don’t worry, we packed them very well without panic. Besides the food, there were many other programs such as singing, game zone, small gifts, lucky draw and so on during the party. We also hold two interesting games for the kids at zone 5. They were so lovely. People chatted and ate happily and welcomed the coming New Year warmly.

For the new year, may everyone stay healthy and cheerful!

Weiru

Educational Tours

I've had several experience bringing people on educational tours during the holidays as personally, I like travelling. My good buddy, Carol and I have been to several different places including Governmental Buildings like the Newater plants and Paya Lebar Airbase, historical sites such as the Central Firestation , "Nature walks" such as Animal resort , vegetable farms , Orchid Garden as well as several factories like Bak Kua Factory, Noodle Factory, Soon Kuah Factory, Otah Factory, Oinment Factory etc. These were very interesting experiences where I would not have chance to see if I had not been on the tour.

The most memorable was the tour to the Newater plant. There were video clips and trained guides to educate us on Newater and the different sophisticated processes that our sewage water will have to undergo before we get our sparkling clear and safe-to-drink water. We get to see the machineries and the different compartments through the glass windows. There were also interactive corners (kid's favourite) which emphasizes the importance of saving water. Therefore, I feel that this is the most educational tour that Carol and I have ever led and the adults and children also agree.

I was never trained as a tour guide before, but through these tours, I've gained some experiences leading tours. Personally, I feel that I am more confident in speaking and engaging the different age groups and this is really a great achievement to me.

However, I feel that there is still room for improvement. Sometimes, the bus companies will pre-plan certain places to go (their affliated companies) and I feel that we are 'forced' to bring people there. Therefore, Carol and I have plans to decide the places we want to go instead of leaving it to the bus company.

After each tour, we will do a review with our participants, and it is really encouraging when we receive quite a number of good comments and to know that some people even came back for us!

YongZhi

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150748372690691938" style="DISPLAY: block; The party included a lucky draw with attractive prizes to be won as well as food (ice kachang, popcorn, etc) and contests for all. There were activities for all walks of life - wine appreciation for the adults, sand painting for the kids as well as Rubik's Cube challenge for the intellectually gifted.

We have also gained much insights on organising future community events through inspiring sharing sessions with some of the RC members.

Through the event, we have realised that the costume masquerade party would not have been successful without:
1) the commitment of enthusiastic & passionate RC members
2) the enthusiasm of supportive & spontaneous residents
3) And of course, who can forget the glittering wigs that added much colour to the party.

As the party drew closer to an end, we could almost see the reluctance and disappointment on the residents' faces. Sadly, all good things come to an end. Yet, in the eyes of many residents, this is not the end and it will never be. It is only the beginning. The beginning of numerous fun-filled activities that await them in 2008.

So my friends, let us join Zone 7 RC in welcoming the arrival of 2008 (soon).
May all RCs and our YEC prosper in years to come!

reported by jk

Xmas Party 2007
Date: 22nd Dec 2007
Time: 7-10pm
Venue: Zone 12 RC Multi-purpose hall

This kind of activity is totally new to me. In our country, we seldom have such parties with the communities. Often we simply stay at home having dinner with the whole family and watching TV program while chatting. That evening, the spot was really hot. I helped to wrap the prizes and keep the children in order during the game. Seeing the smile on the children’s face, I felt so happy. From this party, I got to know more about Singaporeans’ lifestyle and understand their culture better. And I chatted with YEC members and got to be more familiar with several of them. I’m still looking forward to the next events…… I would like to communicate with other YEC members better and make more friends.

By Shenkai

Aloha Xmas Party @ zone 12
Date: 22 dec 2007
Time: 7pm
Venue: Zone 12 RC Multi-purpose hall

This memorable date marks the 3rd successful collaboration between Frontier YEC and zone 12 RC.
Without fail, each year the event have manage to grasp the christmas spirit of the neighbourhood with many themes, among which this years' theme was Hawaiian Christmas. That game indeed helped a lot regarding the team bonding. During the free time, we each introduced ourselves. The objective of this BGM is to create a cozy and lively environment for everyone. In view of the recent fad for singing competitions and every youth will have the desire to showcase their showmanship in singing, we have decided to hold out BGM at a music cafe. The ARK Music Cafe is for known for its “live” singing performances.

Our BGM is held at The ARK Music Cafe whereby we have invited Campus Superstars, Lin Zhiyang and Huang Yangce, to perform for our event. They definitely live up to their standards and mesmerize everyone with their powerful vocals. In addition, to promote interaction with our Youth members, we also have a karaoke session for them to showcase their talents. On top of all, we had attractive lucky draw prizes for our participants. The top prize is a PSP. All in all, we have attracted approximately 75 participants.

From this event, we have learnt to deal with the owners of the music cafe and also what are the things to prepare for our BGM, from the BGM report, participants profiles and the Chairperson, General Secretary and Treasurer’s reports. Even though we have met with problems with the management, we had it going and carried on with our BGM. Lastly, most of our participants had a go on the MIKE to VOICE their favorite songs.

cHeeRs,
sAb

Enchanting Moments Fairytales Storytelling Competition 2007
Date: 21st July 2007
Time: 1-5pm
Venue: Jurong Point Shopping Centre Atrium

This is the second season of our storytelling competition. With a bit of the experience gained from the previous competition, we decided to organize it ourselves and hold the event at Jurong Point.
This year, I am the organizing chairman for the event, therefore I have the chance to work closely with Paddy to approach the various organizations, such as the managers from Jurong Point to discuss with the details of our competition, the banner makers, the performers, the teachers in charge etc.
There are some hiccups now and then before the actual day, such as miscommunications in between different parties, movement problems, space constrains, delays in response from schools etc. However it turned out quite well on the actual day. This time round, we attracted even more participants and we secured a large audience crowd.
This is indeed an invaluable experience for me and I think our YEC members also enjoyed the whole process. I believe next year will be even better.

Carol

Reflection by KS

The Frontier YEC Night Cycling review
Date: As this is our very first storytelling competition, we decide to hold the event at our hall and collaborate with the National Library Board to gain some experience. There are 2 categories, the lower and the upper primary for the competition. Each group consists of no more than 5 pupils and they have around 5 minutes to act out their story.

Getting participants is not an easy task. Many schools are not familiar with the Frontier CC or YEC as we are relatively new. Nevertheless, we managed to attract the participation of around 8 primary schools in the west region. Together with the audience (mostly made up of the parents of the pupils and supporters from schools), there are around 200 people attending our event.

We felt that our hard work was paid off. We must thank Paddy especially as she is the key person to help us run the event. We received some compliments from the teachers in charge from the participating schools and we can see that the pupils are happy. Therefore, we strive to hold the competition the following year and make it a better one!

Carol
